The next Secondsight meeting will be on Thursday, December 2 at 6.30pm. The meeting will be held at the Fraser Gallery, 7700 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda Place, Bethesda, MD 20814. The guest speaker will be Connie Reider.
For more than 20 years, photographer Connie Zucker Reider has been using a camera to express her personal vision of the world around her. Never was that gift more cherished than in 1995, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. While struggling to come to terms with the fear, pain, and groundlessness that followed, Connie used her camera and her journal to document her thoughts and emotions. She discovered that the illness actually had something positive to teach her, an understanding that ultimately changed her life for the better.
Over the past two years Connie has been presenting her book to audiences nationwide. She has spoken at fundraisers, survivorship conferences, and prevention seminars. During the summer she teaches workshops in Maine using her experiences with both photography and cancer to promote healing.
Connie has studied photography with such renowned artists as Arnold Newman, Sam Abell, and Elizabeth Opalenik. She has photographed all over the world, and her work appears in both private and corporate galleries across the country. Her recent book, In Shadow and Light: Looking for the Gifts of Cancer, reflects her signature style, a personalized approach to infrared photography that Connie calls "Dreamscapes."
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Connie owns and operates a fine art and portrait studio in Bethesda, Maryland. She holds a BA in education from the University of Michigan and an MA in human development from the University of Maryland.
Meetings are free for members, $10 for guests. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Secondsight@hotmail.com. For more information, visit www.Secondsightdc.com or call Catriona Fraser at (301) 718-9651.
